Silent Wings

When I painted this, I first covered the canvas with mars black acryilc paint. After that had dried, I added a layer of glazing medium, and then a layer of a mixture of thalo blue and mars black. While these layers were still wet, I started painting the moon and clouds with white. I found out that a bullet-shaped sponge brush works best for this. The white mixed with the still-wet blue-black layer, and created darker and lighter values. When it was dry, I outlined the owl on the dark surface and then painted its color, texture and detail.  I continued to tweak the sky background after it was dry, by adding clouds with my sponge brush and using a blue-black glaze.  I wanted to wooded area on the ground to show up just enough, with the moonlight reflecting on the leaves on the right side, and deep shadows on the left.
