Wisconsin Nights in the Eyes of an Owl
Owls peer out at the night, their huge corneas most efficiently collecting and using even the smallest amounts of available light, whether the night is moonlit or overcast. Their irises and pupils fill the whole eye socket, and that, plus the fact that their eyes aren't spherical, but elongated like tubes, makes them unable to turn their eyes in the socket like we do. That's why they can turn their heads 270 degrees, and bend their necks in almost any direction. I was inspired to paint a close up view of an owl's face, with the night scene reflected in the owl's pupils. I also enjoy the close up details and textures of the owl feathers.
