Back when small farms could still make enough income to support the families raised on them, it still took more than one person to bring in the harvest. Neighboring farmers would go from farm to farm helping each other, spending as much time as necessary at each farm till the work was done.  Back in 1931, when the source photo for this piece was taken, farmers still used draft horses but were transitioning into using farm machinery. They must have been proud of the John Deere tractor. 

I found the black and white, 8 x 10" source photo in an old family album, attached to the black page with stick-on corners like they used at that time.  It was labeled "Harvesting Peas, 1931" in white ink. In my painting, I enlarged the tractor grouping, and added to the background.
