The setting for this drawing is Hensley homestead, an early 20th century settlement. It still exists, although as an outdoor museum, in Kentucky, on top of Brush Mountain on a 600 acre plateau. I found it fascinating, listening to our guide tell about how the extended family lived self-sufficiently on that plateau for decades, beginning in 1903,  only making occasional visits to the town in the valley below. They even had their own school and church.  Our guide spoke  about the folklore and beliefs of that culture, some of which involved owls. An owl, depending on which direction it was flying, where it landed, and so on, was thought by some people to carry an omen. It could have been an impending death, or it could have been good fortune, all depending on the folklore of the people.

I drew the setting from a photo I took on that tour, adding in the owl as the main subject. Then I used Adobe photoshop to replace the sky area with a digital photo. I enjoy the contrast between the color and the black and white.
