This is one of my favorites in the Owl Series, mostly because I like the drawing the best. It's rich in values and textures-one of my favorite things about drawing in pencil. I drew the house and background from a photo I took of an abandoned house at the dead end of a gravel road. It was surrounded by fields and had one or two remaining farm buildings around it. My grandparents, who were farmers, lived there until my mother, their first child turned three years old. My grandpa said they moved from there because he "could get a better deal, or better land" somewhere else. The new place was located maybe a mile away. The old house, with its years of secrets and stories, forms the backdrop for the owl hunting in the foreground. One of the reasons for my fascination with owls is the body of folklore and superstition they have inspired. To some people, living in a secluded place like that, the owl might be an omen of either good fortune or impending calamity.
