Owls are a favorite subject of mine because of both the folklore and the facts surrounding them. If frightening screams and chuckles can be heard around the outbuildings on a farm, they are probably home to barn owls. To the farmer, this sound could be a good omen, because owls are more effective than cats at catching destructive and disease carrying rodents. A single family of barn owls can consume over 1000 pocket gophers, or 3000 mice or voles every year. My grandpa's old barn appears in many of my pictures. It was probably built long before my mother was born in 1932. Mom told me she used to stand on the roof of its lean-to, to call the cows home. And my grandmother would spread a clean sheet on that roof, and spread fresh pealed and sliced peaches on it to dry in the sun. It was torn down years ago, and I'm glad I thought to take photos of it before that happened. It's an important part of family and regional history.
